Mental Illness Numbers

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (51.5 million) lives with mental illness.

Prevalence by condition, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, looks like this:

All of this comes with a high price tag. NAMI reports that “serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings every year.” And 90% of people who die by suicide, which is among the top causes of death in the U.S. (it was No. 11 in 2020), have an underlying mental illness.
